Ever Notice This On The Last Dragon’s 2001 DVD Cover?

The Last Dragon DVD was released on July 3, 2001

The Last Dragon premiered in theaters in 1985 but the DVD wasn’t released until on July 3, 2001. The DVD cover shows a scene we never saw in the film. Leroy is kicking someone he didn’t fight in the movie. Was this scene cut? Who is this guy? If the scene wasn’t in the movie why does it still look familiar? You’re not crazy, the image looks familiar because the guy Leroy is fighting is in another scene.

Sho'nuff delivers a powerful jump kick to the chin of random kung fu fighter in a martial arts demo for Eddie Arkadian. The random fighter was edited into a fight with Leroy for the cover of the original Last Dragon 2001 DVD.

In Sho’nuff’s demonstration of martial arts supremacy for Eddie Arkadian and Rock. He delivers a powerful jump kick to the chin of a random kung fu fighter. It is this random fighter and image that is edited into a fight with Leroy for the cover of the original 2001 DVD.

When the question was posed on Instagram, many of the film’s biggest fans had never noticed, did you?

The Origins of The Last Dragon DVD

Despite a sizable loyal cult following The Last Dragon was reluctantly released on DVD and Blu Ray for that matter. Majid Afayee one The Last Dragon Tribute Podcast hosts and contributors to this site had some interesting insights with regards to the history and origins of The Last Dragon DVD.

“I remember around 2001 or so I read an article online. It was written by Steven Kent. Gosh I wish I could find it basically he interviewed the head of Sony’s home media and inquired as to why The Last Dragon wasn’t on DVD. Basically the guy from Sony felt it didn’t justify a release since it wasn’t marketed well to a genuine (mass aka “white”) audience. Kent, who is Caucasian, disagreed and felt the film was worth a DVD and had an audience. Kent, was able to convince the Sony PR guy and inquired on the rights at the time between Motown and Sony. Sony was able to release it on DVD, and they did with the Michael Schultz commentary. There was talk of a more complete special edition around 2005-06 with Taimak being involved but never materialized.”
